It Grows Off Vancouver Island. Most Canadians Have Never Heard of It.
Marine supplements tend to come in two varieties, and both involve a compromise most buyers never hear about.
The first is taken from open water — whatever the ocean happened to produce that season, with all the variability that implies. How it actually works
Seawater is pumped from the Pacific into large open tanks set beside the ocean on Vancouver Island. Nothing is added and nothing is engineered — the phytoplankton already present in that water simply does what it does in the ocean, only faster, because the conditions are ideal and it is left alone under natural sunlight to multiply.
The numbers are the striking part. Natural seawater carries roughly 800 phytoplankton cells per millilitre. By the time a tank is ready, that has risen to approximately 128 million cells per millilitre — more than a hundred million organisms in a single tank, all of them descended from what came in with the tide.
When the batch is taken, the remaining water is returned to the ocean carrying the same concentration of phytoplankton it arrived with. Nothing is depleted. And because phytoplankton produces oxygen as it grows, a single cultivation batch generates roughly the oxygen output of seven hectares of forest.

Why this particular stretch of water
The Strait of Georgia, on the east coast of Vancouver Island, is one of the most biologically productive marine ecosystems anywhere. Snowmelt off the mountains of Western Canada carries minerals down into the Strait, and the result is an unusually rich and unusually diverse phytoplankton population — as many as 80 different species living in the same water at once.
That diversity is the part most single-species products cannot replicate. A laboratory culture gives you one organism, selected and reproduced. Water drawn from the Strait gives you the community that evolved there together.
What the research examined
In controlled human trials, an antioxidant-rich marine phytoplankton strain (studied at 25 mg per day over 14 days) helped trained subjects preserve strength and recover better after demanding exercise, with researchers attributing the effect largely to how it modulated oxidative stress.
As always, the honest framing: that work was done in active, exercising subjects, measured recovery and antioxidant markers, and studied specific strains rather than this product. An emerging field, not a settled one.
A Canadian company that grows its own

Each batch then goes through three further checks: light microscopy to identify any toxic species that may have appeared during growth; government-approved rapid-test kits for ASP, DSP and PSP; and independent laboratory testing for both safety and nutritional content.
Only after all of it does a batch get released. It's an unglamorous process, and it is the entire reason the sourcing story is worth telling at all.
